5 Must Know eBusiness Stats for 2012

Being involved in internet marketing, you are well aware that inbound marketing is just as essential as opening the front door of your business. It’s the first step that allows leads to get to your business. But, unfortunately accomplishing/magento-development/internet-marketing/social-media/ this is not as easy as a physical location with people walking by. No, with a  website you not only have to open your door (index your site) you have to open doors where the traffic is.

This is where inbound marketing techniques associated with social media come to play!

Don’t be mistaken social media isn’t solely an avenue for you to post all your products and shout about how great you are. Instead it is becoming increasingly influential in consumption behaviors. It’s becoming a new avenue for customer service. People are tweeting for customer help, and responses have been speedy and saved business relationships.

With the growth of social media, the skeptics were hesitant to get on board and dedicate time to managing their social media avenues. It has undoubtedly become an influential factor in business. Now arise the big questions, how can we leverage this factor for greater business?

5 Tempting eBusiness Statistics of 2012 & What to do!

1. LinkedIn for B2B Leads

LinkedIn eBusiness Statistic 2012

According to Social Media B2B, LinkedIn generated the most B2B leads for any company. When businesses were asked if they were actively using LinkedIn as a social media medium only 45% of businesses said they actively used LinkedIn.

If you are a B2B company, and not actively using LinkedIn you could be missing out on business opportunities. The first step is to create a business page on LinkedIn. Let your existing employees know you have created a business LinkedIn profile, so that they can connect and more users can find you.

2. CEO’s Get Involved!

Social Media Development Boulder Statistics

According to an article by eMarketer it is important to consumers that CEO’s are involved in their social media communication. Seventy-seven percent of consumers say they will be more likely to buy from a company if the CEO or upper level management is involved in their social media communication. Almost 95% of people said that they view the brand as more trustworthy and overall increase brand image when management is involved in social media.

We know that CEO’s are busy and their list of to-do’s seems like an endless pad of paper. If the head management is unable to directly facilitate social media channels, then always post on their behalf.

3. Lower Barriers of Involvement

Account Login Requirement statisticsWe know you are trying to collect information to keep involved with your customer base or viewers, but beware that collecting information as a requirement can be a huge barrier to entry and decrease your user involvement. According to Marketing Sherpa 86% of people say they are irritated when the website requires them to make a new account.

As a business you have two options, understanding that asking a user to sign up for your site to view it is asking a bit much. Why don’t you just marry me now and then I will talk to you later? This makes no sense.

Option 1: Take your barrier to entry out and write engaging content that brings users back because of genuine interest. Eventually they will give their information and sign up for your newsletter.

Option 2: Provide options for the user. Don’t give them one option, for example don’t make them sign in only through your services. Provide them with Google, Facebook, Yahoo, and other third party sign-in options.

4. Write Blogs & Share

Blog Development BoulderIt is argued that blogs are the single most important inbound marketing tool. Why? Because (according to Mindjumpers) blogs and social media reach about eighty percent of all internet users in the United States. There is a high correlation between blogging frequency and the number of customers acquired. According to Hubspot 92% of blogs that posted multiple times a day acquired more customers.

Blogging is an important tool for your inbound marketing strategy. Don’t doubt the power of a good blog with useful information. A statistic which should get the ball rolling on your blogging is that B2B companies with blogs generate close to 70% more leads than companies with no blog.

If your website needs to integrate a blog, call Customer Paradigm at 303.473.4400 to speak with a real person about how we can create a blog and generate more inbound leads. Remember, develop strong, useful topics, write clearly and spread the news.

5. Accessible on a Mobile Platform

Mobile Website Design BoulderE-mails and websites are increasing in viewership through a mobile device. 4.8 billion people own phones, and on average 50% of B2B sites are being viewed through a mobile device. The strange statistic is that 75% of all marketers are aware of the increase in viewership through a mobile device but only about 20% of marketers find it a critical move to develop a mobile platform.

I like to be ahead of the curve, not reacting to the change because it becomes a critical function for business to continue to survive. If your B2B company sees a trend for an increase in mobile device visits bring up a mobile website as a critical issue. Trust me, your business will be thanking you for pressing the development.

If your business is in need of a mobile platform development, call Customer Paradigm now at 303.473.4400 to talk to a real person. We listen to your business goals and help you market yourself to accomplish your business goals while meeting the consumers needs.

Facebook Plans for A Search Engine: Opinions of The Crowds

Confirmed: Facebook is Building a “Search Related” Tool

Facebook Search Engine - SEO

Oh how the opinions are coming out as Mark Zuckerberg founder of the social media platform Facebook brings his serious face to discuss the growth into a Facebook search engine. As he calmly boasts without even trying at Disrupt that, “we’re [Facebook] basically doing 1 billion queries a day”. For years it has been in the game plan but with the expansion of dealing with many other trends business takes time.

The Facebook evolution has grown so much. He has revealed to us that Facebook will be starting their own search entity. Currently there are search queries such as “where to eat Italian”. He has admitted that the results are not worthwhile, but where there’s a demand a business will supply.

What Do We Know About the Facebook Search Tool

Everyone is crawling over the new details based on what Mark Zuckerberg has said in relation to the new tool. What functionality will it hold? What will dictate the search results? Does it really have the power to compete with Google?

To be honest we all know very little about what functionality the tool will actually hold. But, we do know one thing that the search tool is being created and the questions which have sparked interest to spur the project have been in relation to businesses and friends.

Facebook Search Queries - SEO - Social Media

“Where have my friends gone to get sushi in New York?”

For Users: From this, I assume that there will be a higher ranking for result within your friendship network.

For Businesses: Encouraging check-ins and ratings for your business will increase the likelihood for repeat customers or showing up higher in search results performed by friend networks.

“Do any of my friends work at X business?”

For Users: You may have a better chance of getting in contact with specific individuals that work at a location without having to go through the entire LinkedIn process of requesting people to be in your network or unable to message individuals without an upgraded account. You may also be able to research more about a business before you sign up. On a privacy note if you don’t want to talk about work or be contacted for an internal opinion you may want to change your privacy settings for employment.

For Businesses: The businesses who have been skeptical about getting involved in social media and Facebook should deeply consider there involvement and employee moral. A disgruntled employee randomly contacted could be the difference between a great new employee which you have been aiming to get. LinkedIn should also consider their accessibility to connect with other users.

Opinions: Will Facebook Search Engine Sink or Swim?

Opinions about Facebook Search Engine

The first question for me is, “why now?” Is it because Zynga isn’t doing well and I don’t think will last much longer than another year? Currently Zynga is reported to be 11% of Facebook’s income. Are they trying to create avenues of revenue through this grand search engine idea?

Undoubtedly, as Zuckerberg explains many times Facebook is well positioned to create a search engine.

1. Their tool starts out with billions of users

2. An already well established social network and there is no learning curve of their existing customer base on how to use the product.

3. Users are already tapped into individuals with opinions that they trust.

4. There has been proven marketability through Facebook.

You couldn’t ask for a better starting point. But the question really comes down to, if they can succeed?

With the news of the new Facebook Search Engine coming out Greenlight Digital created a report asking individuals:

“Would you use Facebook Search Engine over your preferred search engine?”

Will you use Facebook Search Engine?

The Big Opinions..

The Google Enthusiast

“This whole idea is a joke.  Why would I want to use Facebook for search when I can use far larger and more comprehensive search engines like Google? I guess it depends on whether you’re looking for accurate information or something your stoner friend clicked “Like” on a couple of years ago. Regarding the example given above for sushi restaurants, frankly I trust the comprehensiveness of Zagat reviews more than the limited experience of a friend visiting New York.” -Yahoo User

“Man, when are you fools going to quit this, OH I THINK THEY CAN COMPETE WITH GOOGLE CRAP!, ZUCK talks alot , but maybe and truthfully , all of you will admit maybe, FB’s focus should be services that actually make money…” -Anonymous

The Facebook Enthusiast

“Zuck is a pimp he will killlll the goog.” -Facebook User

The Know-it-Alls

“Told you so 2 years ago!” – Facebook User

Your turn

What do you think about this Facebook Search Engine?

How will Google react?

Do you think Facebook can compete with Google?

Twitter Stepping Up SEO Factors

Twitter Adds Content to Directories

The wildest SEO moves by big companies are done in the secrets of the night.

You may not know this, but Twitter has launched a user directory which contains every twitter account. The full directory is accessible when you are logged out of Twitter, it is located in the footer and basically works as a Sitemap. A smart SEO move for websites is to always put the sitemap on the home page because it is the first page this crawled the most thoroughly. By placing this new user directory on the homepage Twitter is putting every user profile up for the crawl call.

First: Results on Hashtag Association

Well. I wouldn’t call this wild, but Twitter has made big changes in the crawlability of users accounts. For example, when searching for information on Google specific tweets are now showing up in search results. From my results, I have seen that it has mainly been in relation to keywords associated to hastags “#”.

For instance, if you label a tweet with a hashtag and it has been retweeted multiple times which increases it’s value and association it is probable that your tweet will show up in it’s own individual search result. Twitter has developed a page result, it displays the users profile with the specific tweet below and the interactions as a result of the tweet.

Follow Customer Paradigm’s Twitter: @custparadigm

Second: Results on Directory Profiles

Twitter has made the profiles of each Twitter user indexed. https://twitter.com/i/directory/profiles/

Twitter Profiles have been indexed

What does this mean for users?

For businesses this increases the SEO value of association to your username. Which makes creating and picking a username even more important. For example all the above names and associated Twitter accounts will result under the keyword search for “Annette”. Although, I say now that the importance of picking a username will affect your exposure of your Twitter account while that is true now. I am always thinking about what is to come next.

With the current downward trending of Exact Match Domain (EMD) url’s I think eventually the same will take affect for Twitter usernames. For instance, SEO accounts that do not active tweet will rank lower for their Twitter profile despite the fact that their profile url is Twitter.com/SEO. In the end I believe it will come down to the quality of tweets over time. Yes, we do tweet about the occasional weather update or something that is not within the collective interest of our followers, but essentially it will play the same role as new content.

Twitter Indexed Profile - Social media - SEO

How to Make Your Profile Indexed?

Google bots are currently running through the new directory of millions of Twitter profiles to be indexed. There are currently 673,000 profiles that have indexed through Google and Bing crawls a bit slower than Google.

Why Hasn’t This Been Done From The Start?

If I was running Twitter I would be doing anything and everything to continue to gain traction for all my profiles and make Twitter accounts an even more enticing tool for social media bloggers and SEO guru’s.

So, why now?

1. Google Real Time Search Results

When Twitter first started out there were many issues between Google and Twitter. If you remember Google launched a “real time” search results to increase the relevance of people searching for issues at that moment in time. For example if you were searching about “Colorado Fires” Google wanted the search results to come up in accordance with the latest fires not the “history of fires in Colorado”.

With this real time change came a huge emergence of Twitter feeds showing up in SERP’s and taking over the top 10 rankings. Because Twitter was the “real time” of news, if there was an event people were tweeting about it and this was especially true during sporting events. As quietly as the real time change came into the search engine, it quickly slipped away.

2. Twitter SEO Value

Talk about a nightmare of content from an SEO perspective, even though you have plenty of content that is fresh and new and great interactions, you have an undeniable amount of duplicate content kindly named “re tweeting” and tweets in general are taking snippets from big articles and spreading them.

With the cleaning up of the content and information, Twitter has finally come to a position where there content will no longer create poor SEO value, so the timing is perfect for indexing profiles.

Social Media Value of Profitable Customers on Magento

Which Social Media RouteIf you keep hearing that your website needs social media plugins, then the next question is, “which ones?” With so many social media channels it is difficult to know if you need to be on all of them or just the big ones? And, most importantly what does this plugin tell me where Google Analytics fails to cover? We will go over all these questions and the solution I have found so far.

Value of Social Sharing on Magento

Being a social media enthusiast I believe that people aren’t solely on their personal profiles to watch their personal profiles grow, but they are truly there to see what is going on involving their interests and friends. Saying this, I believe the biggest mistake any business owner makes is disregarding the influence of social sharing simply because they do not understand the relation to their store and more importantly conversions. I hope that after reading this article you will re-consider your business approach to social sharing and profitability.

First, the most important reason for sharing, is that the recommendation of friends in your network tilt the tables drastically on whether or not you are more inclined to buy the product. According to Ragan.com 75% of people don’t believe that ads tell the truth about their products and around 70 percent of people are more likely to buy a product if a friend has referred it to them. Unless your product is so revolutionary or perfectly fits the need of an individual it is rare that a user will work to post your product. But, if you make it a simple push of a button, it is much more likely your product will be shared.

Make It Easy For Users to Share Your Content With Social Plug-Ins

The second reason, with every individual who is engaged with your product whether sharing, liking or even referring, your product is able to be viewed by their entire social network. Talk about a pyramid of influence!

Think of Shares As Conversions for Media Reach

How Google Analytics Tracks Social Media

Google Analytics offers you the full flexibility to view your engagement through social media channels.

Social Media Engagement Google

From this graph I am able to see how many visits I have received via a Social Media channel. I am also able to see a deeper breakdown of how many clicks are coming from what specific channels. This is a great way to discover which channels are driving the most traffic to your website.

You are also able to view the amount of conversions that come from social sharing, and the conversion value if your Google Conversion Tracking is set up correctly. This allows you to see the dollar amount in sales you have made directly from a user entering through a social media channel. This is very useful information if you are running a social media campaign and want to prove the profitability to a business.

If you are interested in learning more about setting up conversion tracking for your eCommerce store, pick up the phone and call Customer Paradigm today at 303.473.4400 to talk to a real person today.

How AddShoppers for Magento Tracks Social Media

Add Shoppers is my favorite Social Media Tracking Extension for Magento.

Here is why, Add Shoppers takes basic information and gives you the pieces that really matter. It is great to have a large Facebook group and Twitter followers, but what if you were able to scale down

Social Media Incentives

the mass of your Facebook followers and find the top 10 most profitable customers?

Once you have found those top 10 customers, what if you could market directly to them knowing they are more likely to share and recommend? What if you knew they would be fifty-percent more likely to convert? Would that be worth targeting?

With AddShoppers Magento Extension this information becomes readily available to you. With ROI tracking that is profitable for your business model I have yet to find another extension which gives you the same level of detail.

Three levels to track Social Media ROI on:

  • Single product level or SKU
  • Influencer level of a single customers
  • Store wide level

Not only are you now able to see how people are getting to your site, but you are able to view the other side how your products are being shared. You can now view a specific product and see how it has been shared via the social media streams. You can feature your most Pinned products or shared products on your screen. With this Conversion tracking you are able to view which social networks drive sales per product.

My favorite addition which shows to me that AddShoppers really understands the influence of Social Media on Magento eCommerce is their pre-purchase rewards application. This application gives shoppers and incentive to join your social channels by offering small incentives such as 2% of your next purchase. You have the ability to set different rewards based on different channels, through this users gain an incentive to join all of your social channels.

This can be a hard concept for many business owners to get behind because it seems like you are throwing away money to get one more like on your Facebook page, or one more Twitter follower. In reality, you are essentially paying for a targeted customer base. People that have an intent to buy will like your page in order to receive 2% off.

I hope I have cleared some confusion about the importance of having social media channels on your Magento website. I am so happy that I have found AddShoppers, if you are interested in getting this extension for your Magento eCommerce site call Customer Paradigm today at 303.473.4400 to talk about how you can add more shoppers to your social media streams! Or fill out the contact form below!

Facebook Taking Action Against Fake Likes

Fighting Anonymous Facebook Likes

To many SEO companies it seems like an easy formula.

Increasing your social media interactions increases the user interactions which increases your Google rankings. So, start at the beginning and increase your social media interactions to increase your Google rankings. Voila! It’s done.

No. Be cautious of SEO companies which tell you they can increase your Facebook likes to 1,000 by the weekend. This may sound like a great perk, I couldn’t get 1,000 likes by this weekend or 3 months for that matter, but fake likes don’t increase your value.

If you haven’t, read my post on: Fake Social Media Fans or Google Reviews

Facebook Cracking Down on Fake Likes

The main goal of cracking down on fake likes is to stop programs which generate fake “likes” for a business. Although this is said to possibly influence only a handful of likes, Facebook wants to act now to take a stand against poor business practices. My theory is that they know that social media plays a role with Google, and by taking action to have integrity in their metrics they will continue to be included. I can understand this, if they begin to lose integrity for being a true source of reviews, they will become mis-leading and less used.

In all honesty, I would not say many users go onto their Facebook pages and view a business and determine if that business has 100 likes they must be great! There is not a cap on the amount of likes a page can have, whereas a true rating system is on a fixed scale. More or less I have found it true that many Facebook users like a business page as more of a way to “subscribe” to the business’s news feed. I personally liked SEOmoz on Faceboook so that I could see their news feed in the mix with all my friends post updates. Not because I wanted to check them out on Facebook and evaluate how many likes they had to determine if I was willing to visit their website. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the legitimacy of Facebook acting on this issue.

If not that, then this?

Here is my possible speculation on what is really going on. Some articles have quoted that with the improved elimination of fake likes it will only affect 1% or less likes on any given page. That seems like a very small amount to make a big deal about.

My theory is we should be expecting a rating system similar to Yelp and Google Local Pages. Since people are checking in quite often through Facebook pages linking reviews seems to be the next logical step. What do you think?

Oh… speaking about Fake “likes” you should like our page on Facebook >> Like Here

What is Reddit? Reddit for Marketing

Reddit LogoIf President Obama is on Reddit, there will be a following.

What is Reddit?

Reddit was founded in 2005 and the name was founded as a play on words “I read it”. Being based in San Francisco, California, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian created this social news source.

How it Works: User Side

You are able to view Reddit without creating an account at >> Reddit.com

In order to participate, you must create a user account. The unique thing about Reddit, is they are promoting free speech in a public space. It is common that everyone will remain an anonymous user through their account name. For example the username: Icouldbeanyone. Protecting your privacy and the privacy of others is very important to uphold the core of Reddit.

How it Works: Purpose

Make no mistake, Reddit is not another Facebook or Twitter where you create your own world on the web and are focused on increasing your friends or followers. On the contrary, Reddit allows each user to post a link (there is a limit on how many links you can post in a given time increment to avoid spamming) that link is then voted up or down by other users. If the “redditers” as they are so lovingly coined, like your post it will get voted up and vice versa.

For example the link below was submitted of funny Morgan Freeman pictures in a Photobooth. It was voted an aggregate amount up of 2069 votes. There are many factors which play a role in the positioning of each link which allows for the home page to be constantly changing. Some factors which contribute to your positioning are the age of the link, the comment amounts and most importantly the voting.

Reddit Voting

Morgan Freeman in a Photobooth - Reddit.com

How it Works: Subreddits

Subreddits is the same as a subcategory. To find any subreddit simply search for your topic of interest in the search bar. There is no limit to how many subreddits you can create. If you are interested in Pine Needles >> View Here. The possibility of subjects is never limited because the possibility of interests are endless.

More frequently than not, people have certain interests that they will always be captivated by. For these Reddit users you can subscribe to those streams. If you are looking for new interests, going to the home page is a great place to start.

Entering the World of Reddit

Ok, so you’ve heard enough and you’re ready to get started with Reddit. It’s interesting, you’re a social media enthusiast and you want to make sure if there’s a train everyone is getting on you’re getting as close to the drivers seat as you can.

Warnings About RedditReddit WArnings

As pure respect to the veteran Redditers I implore you to fully read the Reddiquette >> Read Here

Not only is this to keep with their standards and not stick out like a sore thumb. It is to avoid your posts from being trolled. Trolled is being slandered for your contribution in a negative manner. For example if you post a link on Reddit and it is not anything interesting but you are in forms “advertising” you will get negative comments, this is to be expected.

Again… I implore you to full read the Reddiquette >> Read Here

My final warning… Reddit is addictive, have fun and don’t post advertisements.

Reddit Marketing

Using Reddit for Marketing

So, how do you post information on Reddit and not advertise? How do you get the Reddit community to be interested in your material?

Blogging Topics of Interest

The hardest part about blogging is finding an interesting topic to blog about which will ultimately add value to your website and drive traffic to your website. I have found browsing through the subreddits has helped me find blogging topics very fast. Reddit does all the work on displaying topics that are interesting. All I have to do is pick through them and build the story behind the concept. It’s that easy.

Posting Articles / Images / Infographics

Of course – post your articles, images and infographics to Reddit. Every Reddit user when viewing your post will link directly to your website. If the users are intrigued enough you gain free traffic.

IMPORTANT : Post your content in the correct subreddit to avoid being voted down purely for irrelevance to the topic.

Reddit is a great Social Media  source and unique in its purpose. I hope that this post has given you a better understanding of how you can use Reddit for marketing and gaining free traffic as well as a general understanding of the platform. If you have any other questions, please let me know via comments.

Where does your Commute End? We Park on the Wall

Commuting to Customer Paradigm

At Customer Paradigm we know it’s not always the goal that makes the world keep turning, it’s the journey’s to get to those goals. And though at times we may feel we are just pedaling one motion after another, the goal at our work is a little bit more rewarding.

<<– I mean, check this out!

It’s like we are hanging a trophy on the wall, every day we make it into work! Who ever said four wheels is better than two was gravely mistaken.

I suppose that was what attracted me to the bicycle right from the start. It is not so much a way of getting somewhere as it is a setting for randomness; it makes every journey an unorganized tour.

- Daniel Behrman

Commuting to work is not a hidden lifestyle in Boulder, Colorado. I see people in suits waiting to take a bus into work, where in California this would be asking for a bad day. Boulder ranks number 1 for people who walk to work, work at home or carpool to work. Bicycling is held to such a high priority in Boulder, that sometimes snow plows will take care of local bike paths before the streets.

Don’t be fooled…. Bicycling isn’t just for the Boulder lifestyle.

According to the Outdoor Foundation, Bicycling is the second most popular outdoor activity in the United States. We all know that bicycling is a form of exercise and therefore it has great health implications for you. Some health benefits are weight management, cholesterol levels and even blood pressure. And, if you are watching you wallet in this economy, it’s less expensive than a car. Most car trips in the US are broken down where 28% are less than a mile, 40% are less than 2 miles, and 50% are less than 3 miles.

Next time you are considering hoping in you car, think about hoping on your bike instead! Happy Pedaling!

Lost Reviews on Google Local Business Profiles

Missing Google reviews?

Are you a business owner whose reviews have disappeared from your Google Local page? One day, you had a great review and when you scanned back through the reviews it was gone. Don’t let yourself believe this is a glitch in the system; there is a reason and a method to these lost reviews.

The disappearance of these reviews has been monitored and under suspicion since 2006. Google has placed a filter to avoid black-hat SEO tactics such as spam reviews. This is when a group of individuals posts false reviews on the Google Local Page to boost their page rankings. In their goal to avoid fake comments, there has been an unfortunate loss of legitimate reviews which has left many business owners frustrated. For more information on fake social media followers read: Fake Social Media Followers.

If you have lost a Google Local Page review and would like Google to restore it: Click Here.

Fair warning, with any communication to the great Google a response is never guaranteed.

What Are the Rules for Reviews?

Often to increase rankings, businesses solicit for reviews. For example: “Post a review on our Google Local Page and receive 10% off your next rafting trip”. This mass call for reviews results in a rush of evaluations within a close time frame which can result in solicited reviews being flagged and ultimately deleted from your business profile. Due to the flagging, you run the risk of losing legitimate reviews which have been batched into a specific time frame.

I believe it is Google’s goal to have people review on their own accord, without being prompted. If your customers are so pleased with your services they are compelled to write, it will result in a random pattern of reviews.

But, What if Your Business works in Waves?

A big question on my mind is, “What if I run an event planning company?” Events are not held on a consistent path, there are spikes and naturally with these spikes may come waves of reviews. How is a small business to hold these legitimate reviews if the natural cycle of business is moving from peak to peak?

As an SEO specialist I can say we are constantly chasing after Google and their algorithm change. As much as you try to cut them out of the chain of influence, it’s Google’s game with their rules. This may be one instance where Google needs to reconsider their filter to avoid losing legitimate reviews for business owners. One simple solution is for businesses to start looking for other forms of review sources to have people check out and post their reviews, one that will not filter the reviews without warning. I am not saying to avoid using Google reviews period, the reviews will always matter in your rankings and they will still occur naturally. But, instead directing your personal reviews to another website may be a profitable move.

Reviews With A Safety Net

If you are a business that does work in waves, you should be cautious of your reviews. A good practice to adapt would be copying and Safe business practice for keeping Google Reviewskeeping any legitimate reviews you do receive. If they are deleted, you will have no other way to refer to the reviews without a copy. Make sure you set up your Google Local Page to send your e-mails whenever you receive a new review.

I know it is very difficult to receive business reviews and when you do get them they mean a lot. It’s a way for people publicly proclaim how you have been doing. As rare as it may be in some work places to receive feedback, you get the joy of feedback of your work from your customers and through a filter those legitimate may be incorrectly deemed fake. This is still a situation which is completely speculative, but under the microscope to be watched. If you have any updates on this situation or you have been affected please tell us about your experience.

SEO and Fake Social Media Fans

Fake Twitter Followers for SEO

Yes it is true that social media is playing an increasingly important role in the SEO value of your website. This is no surprise, after all if Google wants to produce websites that are relative it is intuitive that users will interact with a site the more they find it useful. It’s easy to think creating fake profiles and liking your page will help your social media profile, ultimately helping the SEO value of your webpage.

Below is a popular offer from a fake twitter follower company: Buy Active Fans. They provide 10 tiers of prices and quantity for Twitter followers. If you are interested in this service they are a great company.

Purchasing fake twitter followers

If this is All I Have to do, Why isn’t Everyone Doing It?

You know the saying, “sounds too good to be true”  well in this case, if it is so easy for a company to buy 100,000 extra followers and it increases their SEO value, why don’t you see the leading companies doing this? You would think an extra $95 a month to increase their Twitter followers by 2,000 would be a menial cost. It is apparent to search engines like Google and even humans when your Twitter followers jump by a few thousand in a night.

Fake Twitter Followers has been highly scrutinized as a poor politics move. Mitt Romney increased his twitter following by 100,000 new followers over night. Why did he do this? Simply, popularity gains popularity. If his campaign strategists were able to show a bounding leap in followers and support it might change the potential voters mentality seeing a leap in support through his Twitter campaign. Unfortunately the illusion of popularity was revealed as a lie.

Buying fake twitter followers is becoming a black hat SEO tactic. Twitter and Facebook strongly discourage the purchasing of fake fans and followers to boost your online campaign. With Google’s Penguin update placing a strong emphasis on the need for quality content at a consistent rate, you have to remain ahead of the curve and assume the need for quality will trickle into your social media efforts.

Fake Followers and SEO Value

By purchasing fake followers your number of followers may increase but the interaction will not. Every true social media campaign is chasing the goal of achieving engagement and interest. Having your numbers skyrocket with no engagement will not increase your SEO value and you will no longer be considered a contender for your competition if you engage in poor SEO tactics.

3 Facebook Hidden Features

Facebok Hidden Features

There are many features on Facebook, we don’t have time to know all of them, so we do the best with what we know.

But, what if you used the hidden features and your Facebook group page became more profitable? What if you could market on Facebook and find your target market without paying for the low converting Facebook ads? It starts to make sense why hidden Facebook tools are “hidden”. Here I am to reveal these tools, ones that I have found particularly useful.

If you have any questions about your Social Media campaigns please contact us with your question by filling out the contact form below.

1. Re position Your Photos

Facebook Re Positioning an Image PostWhen you post a picture, the picture is uploaded and the image adjustment you get is the image you show. You hope that people will click on the image and see the full spectrum of the photo. But, what if you could adjust the photo so the picture is able to show off the most intriguing part that will translate into likes and interactions? Facebook has become an image throne for marketing and just like any marketing structure you want to show the parts that catch peoples attention.

I frequently use this tool when I am posting websites that Customer Paradigm has worked on, otherwise Facebook’s default is to post the header of the screenshot and I fail to grasp the content area of the website. By making small image adjustments I am able to display the body of the website rather than focusing on the background image.

When marketing on Facebook always remember the important truth that image posts get higher rates of interaction. To increase the quality of the images that you post you should be concentrating on the marketing aspect of every image. Even though it may seem trivial a good way to think of every post is a small “billboard” on your followers walls. People are flying through their news feeds as fast as cars on a highway, catching their attention is always a marketing game.

2. Choose an Audience for your Posts

Location and Language Targeting for Posts on Facebook

This is my favorite hidden tool for Facebook, talk about targeting with joy! This great tool allows for admins to increase the relevance of posts to your audience. You definitely want to avoid becoming cumbersome to your audience with posts that are not relevant to them. By targeting your location / language for your followers you are able to post topics that will directly interest them.

Target your Audience on FacebookFor example, if you are a clothing store and the French store location is featuring a new outfit, you can target those followers so they can be aware of the new offerings, while avoiding showing the new outfit to your stores in United States. By this simple targeting, it completes two goals relevance to the target market, and not giving false hope or excitement to those unable to receive your product.

Unless you are increasing brand awareness (simply trying to increase followers) on Facebook this is a great way to market yourself without paying for Facebook ad costs. I am growing skeptical of the Facebook ads and their effectiveness. If you have any thoughts on Facebook ads and would like to share please comment and let me know.

3. Highlighting your Posts

Highlighting your Facebook Post

Although your Cover Photo is still one of the most important assets you have on your site as far as visual capital, by highlighting your posts you are able create “cover photo” like post that stretches all the way across your timeline.

This is a great way to feature your products, when scrolling throughout your timeline it is impossible to not notice a picture that takes up the whole space across your page. Many groups fail to use this feature, simply because they don’t know about it.

To do this you simply click on the star at the top right of your post (shown on the image to the left), this is done AFTER you post. One mistake I frequently see is when people find out this highlight feature, they highlight everything which defeats the purpose of highlighting anything. Make sure to manage your excitement, and only highlight the products that are “highlight worthy” so to say. An increase every now and then is more noticeable than a constant increase.

Conclusion

With these 3 hidden features of Facebook you should be equipped with a few more skills to make your social media marketing campaign more effective and relative to your target audience.

Purpose of Facebook Insights as a Page Admin

Understanding Facebook Insights as a Page admin

The new Facebook Insights were created to help page admins have a deeper understanding of their Facebook business page. A better understanding of what?

  • Group page performance
  • Assess the interaction value of the various content types
  • Optimize posts to increase share value to your audience

Accessing your Facebook Insights

Facebook Insights are ONLY able to viewed if you are an admin on a Facebook Group Page.

If you have a group page and are not an admin, then ask to be appointed an admin user or a “insights only” user. If you only use Facebook for personal communication with friends and are not involved in a Facebook Group Page, then be merry, post away, but this excerpt is not applicable to your Facebook needs.

Accessing your Facebook Insights

1. Sign in to your Facebook Account

2. Scroll down below your profile picture to view your pages that you are an admin for. Pick the Facebook Page you want to see Insights for.

If you are unable to see the pages that you are an admin for, click on the “pages and ads” tab. You should find your page there, if you do not see it there, then you have not been added as an admin to the group page.

Graph of Facebook Insights

Resting on the top half of the screen you will see the admin panel. Scroll down the admin panel to right above your group page, you will see a graph similar to the one on the left. Click “See All” in the top right corner.

4 Main Metrics of Facebook Insights:

  • Total Likes
  • Friends of Fans
  • People Talking about this
  • Weekly Total Reach

Insights Dashboard

Facebook Insights Dashboard
Total Likes: The number of unique people who like your page
Friends of Fans: The number of people who are friends with your Fans, including current Fans. This metric represents the total number of people you could potentially reach if all of your Fans were talking about your business to their friends.
People Talking about This: The number of people who have actually engaged with your page in some form in the last seven days. This could include Likes, comments or shares of a post, Questions answered, people tagging your page in an update or photo, users who have responded to an event on your page or who have checked-in using Facebook Places. This is based on a seven-day period from the previous week.
Weekly Total Reach: This is the number of people who have seen any content associated with your Page (including any Ads or Sponsored Stories pointing to your Page) over the past 7 days.

The Goal of Facebook as a Page Admin

Facebook Page Goal as an Admin

Your goal is to publish content that your target market is interested in. Not only any content, but content that is relevant to your industry. Here is a great article on 5 Mistakes to avoid when using Facebook.

Posting engaging content for your users is an important success metric for your Facebook Group page. With the insights you are able to determine which specific content is increasing the virality of your posts. This information is shown in the table below your insights. It breaks down every post into the following columns.

Facebook Insights Table

 Understanding Facebook Insight Table

This table is my most frequently used tool. This table serves as a log of your actions on Facebook, and displays the audience interaction in a numeric value rather than an ambiguous graphic. This sheet is given to help you achieve your goals as a Facebook page admin by evaluating which types of posts are having the largest impact on your followers. The most intriguing statistics is the “virality” percentage. This metric is determined by the percentage of people who have created a story or post based on your post. So far, I have found that it is highly correlated with the “People talking about this” metric.

Facebook Insights: Reach

To view this section, scroll to the top of your insights and select the “reach” tab.

Understanding Reach of Facebook Insights

For those of you who have used the Geographic metric in Google Analytics this will be a very familiar chart for you. For those of you who have not, this chart shoes the demographics and geographic locations of the audience who viewed content of your page, either through shares or likes of their friends or directly from following the page.

This metric helps you understand your target market and where they are coming from. The more that you can relate to your target market, the better performing your page will be. If you are able to see an increase in views from a new city, you could make a landing page for that city on your webpage, since there is an interest from a newly growing target market. Or, maybe you could target a Google Adwords campaign towards that geographic location. Never ignore the potential for new customers.

Creating mp3 files for a website… from an iPhone

I needed to create a few audio mp3 files for a website, but needed to do it in a hurry.

Instead of running home to get advanced audio equipment, I just used the voice recorder function on the iPhone 4S.

After recording a file, I used the “Share” button to email the file to myself.  At this point, the file was in the .m4a file format.

I saved each file (renaming it from memo.m4a to something more descriptive), and then imported them into iTunes.

I then did the “Create mp3 version” tab in iTunes, and went to the iTunes library to grab the files.

I then uploaded via FTP to the site, linked to them, and it’s done.

Probably a little better quality with professional recording equipment, but this was the quick / fast / easy way to generate the mp3 audio files and post them up to the website.

5 Facebook Marketing Mistakes to Avoid

Facebook Marketing Mistakes

Many people know how to use Facebook and how to utilize it for their business. With so many opinions about the “5 Must do’s on Facebook”, or the way to “manage your Facebook account for business”, how are you to know what really works and what doesn’t work for your business?

It is clear that Facebook is a powerful social media tool, in this short blog we are going discuss how you can manage your Facebook account effectively by avoiding these 5 marketing mistakes.

Let’s answer first: Why is it important to not make Facebook mistakes?

Answer: Facebook followers represent an existing customer base usually customers that are extremely profitable because they have found your page and “agreed” to follow you and see your updates. Facebook followers also represent a potential customer base. Even though these are two great things for any business. The caution, don’t make Facebook mistakes, because it can cost you. If you wrong one of your existing followers, they can post a bad review, which greatly decreases your brand value in their networks minds.

5 Facebook Marketing Mistakes to Avoid

Social media Border

 1. Setting up your Profile Incorrectly or Incompletely

Fill out your Facebook ProfileWhen setting up a Facebook account, the fields that are given are provided for a reason. When you begin your Facebook page for business, fill out as many fields as you can. This may seem like a common sense step, but it is frequently forgotten. Businesses will set up their pages and be so eager to post content and find new friends that they will forget the basic profile steps. Facebook profile information if similar to your “business card” information.

Remember it is important to set a url for your business page. Picking a profile url such as Facebook.com/CustomerParadigm makes sense for our business. To set a Facebook url go to this page: Facebook URL. You can only change this twice, so be careful what you choose.

Social media Border

2. Posting at the Wrong Time or the Wrong Place

Correct Facebook PostingThis is one topic that there are many opinions on, some say to post as many times as you Tweet, some say to post quality content so you are not spamming, my thoughts are to post at the right time in the right place.

The right time to post on Facebook? Posts between 1-4 pm E.T. have received the best traction. The best post traction throughout the whole week is on Wednesday at 3 pm.

If these post times are in the middle of your day, you can always schedule your posts to occur at the peak hours of interaction.

The right place to post of Facebook? Posting on your group page is the right place to promote your products and services. You can even get away with posting on your personal page and promoting your business. But, posting about your business on your personal friends page is NOT the right place to post.

Bonus: The right content to post on Facebook? Posting content that is relevant to your business is the right content. If you are a fashion design page, you don’t want to be posting content about the new apple laptops. Keep your content relevant to your business.

 Social media Border

 3. Posting too Much Text

Length of Text for Facebook PostsPosting too much text such that people are not reading your content and simply moving onto the next news feed item can greatly hurt your interactions. A good rule of thumb, is to treat your Facebook text the same as Twitter text, which is limited to only 140 characters about 2 sentences. This is enough describe what your image or link is about, and small enough that someone is willing to read the 2 sentences and move on to interacting with your post.

Posts with less that 250 characters on average receive 60% more likes than posts with characters over 250. Don’t let this deter you from posting valuable information if you have something to say, but, if you are posting and trying to promote an image or a link it is better to keep the text to a minimum.

Social media Border

4. Failing to use Facebook Insights

Facebook InsightsIf you are a marketer, data is your foundation for reason and actions. Failing to use your Facebook Insights is saying that you don’t value free data and what it is saying about your business. Here is a quick guide to understanding Facebook Insights and the implications it means for your business.

Total Likes: This number indicates the amount of likes your group page currently has. The percentage next to it, is the increase in likes over the week. For example if you have 100 existing likes, and you achieve 10 new likes over the week, you could have a 10% increase.

Friends of Fans: This number represents the number of potential followers you could reach. It is similar to an “impression potential”.   You have the ability to reach a new customer base through posting engaging content that your follower can share on their wall.

People Talking about This (PTAT): This number is a great indicator of the quality of your posts. For example, when your information is higher quality, users are more likely to interact by liking, sharing, or commenting. With an increase in these three actions, the PTAT percentage increases.

Weekly Total Reach: This number reflects that amount of unique users who view anything to do with your page. This includes your Facebook advertising goals, your group posts and people mentioning your brand.

Social media Border

5. Failing to use your Cover Photo

Utilizing your Facebook Cover Photo

It’s not too often that a social media platform provides a huge platform to show your greatest products on. Failing to use your cover photo to show off your new products is a huge mistake that businesses make. Yes, it is important to build brand awareness, but it is also important to continually engage your followers on Facebook.

Here’s my rule: If Facebook users have found your page and followed you, give them the products they want to see. They know your brand.

If you are new to your Facebook group page and are not well known, I do recommend using your logo for your profile picture to build brand awareness and recognition. Especially when people are trying to discover your page, and can’t remember your full business name a logo can help you be easily recalled.

 Social media Border

Conclusion

Facebook is a powerful marketing tool, but tailoring your efforts in the right direction can make a huge impact. Work smart not harder. Understanding your customer base reach and the daily interaction you can have with your followers is what makes Facebook unique. Avoid making the 5 Facebook Marketing Mistakes and your Facebook marketing strategy will be taking 5 steps toward a healthier campaign.

3 Musts for your Pinterest Research

Pinterst Logo

If you are using Pinterest for marketing, don’t negate the need to perform research.

Social Media can have the tendency to feel extremely informal and therefore feel a need to not perform formal research. Diligent research on all social streams is very important, I will discuss 3 musts for Pinterest Research. There are always more research techniques that can be performed, but here are the essential techniques that will affect your bottom line. Remember the profitability of Pinterest. Pinterest has the highest average order amount from any social media referral.

Before you start your Pinterest research the first step that every research must do, is identify the end goal. The end goal for pinterest may be an increase in re-pinning, it may be an increase in sales from pin board referrals or simply brand awareness. After you have identified your goal(s), let the research begin!

3 Musts for your Pinterest Research

1. Research Competition for Re-pins

Research Competitors on Pinterest

To the left are two pins, both are purses against a blank background. One is for Coach, the other is for Gucci. Coach has 35 repins while Gucci has 17 repins. What makes the difference?

Business Perspective: Even though this is not a large difference on numbers, the question is the reach of the people who repinned it. There is not a consistent ratio in repin:reach, for example every 1 repin you reach an extra 300 people. It is all dependent on who repins, so 2 repins for Gucci could mean an extra reach of 1500 people, but 2 repins for Coach could mean an increased reach of 25 people.

But, people see the likes and repins not the reach.

Followers Perspective: I am more likely to re-pin and like if I see a large numbers of repins. It’s the crowd mentality of, “it is popular I want to share it as well”. Keep in mind that although as a business you want the more profitable followers (ones with a greater network) you also are able to acquire new followers through popularity so any re-pin is a good pin.

Down to the Research: Research your competitors and view their pinning tactics. If they have high re-pins on certain images, analyze what it is about that image that is appealing followers to re-pin. Often, I see clothing items with a price being re-pinned at a higher rate. Also boards that are taken with a more artistic flare are re-pinned more often than the same product looking like a catalog image. Performing the research to see what is working for your competition is worth your time, and will change your process to create more profitable pins.

2. Is Pinterest Driving Traffic & Conversions?

Pinterest Driving Online traffic

No matter what your goal with Pinterest is, driving traffic to your boards is key to achieving that goal. You can track the performance of Pinterest by viewing your site referrals through Google Analytics.

Business Perspective: Driving traffic to your site is a two way process. Having the ability to pin directly from your site allows users to interact more with your site, and in return increases your follower reach. Pinterest has already done a great job of linking users Facebook accounts to the Pins. You can thank Pinterest for that one. This is part of the reason Pinterest has increased their customer base so rapidly is the use of an existing social base. To maintain traffic and conversions continue to make boards that are pinworthy.

Followers Perspective: If your pins are interesting, I will repin them and share them with my friends. If I continue to follow your pins, I will have a higher chance of buying something some day.

Down to the Research: Research your pin tactics, view what is being re-pinned. What products are actually converting for you? Is it because of the artistic twist? Is it because you clearly stated a price? or was it just luck? Try to narrow down the solid correlations between your pins and conversions. This can be done by isolating the pins and conversions over time. As with any research, you must achieve a standard sample size in order to draw conclusions. Patience and consistency are they keys to this research step.

3. Do your Keyword Research

Keyword Research for SEO strength

Don’t think you got away with not having to perform keyword research. Pinterest still is a website, and performing the correct keyword research still plays a roll even in this world of boards and pins. There is an increase of search trends within a webpage. In Pinterest, there is a search bar in the top left that trigger your keywords.

Business Perspective: Keywords are not your enemy. In Pinterest they are not subject to the same rigid rules of Google Algorithms. They work more as “category tags” you can write “lemon cake” 15 times on the description and you will still show up for the search query “lemon cake”. There is no downside to using keywords on Pinterest. You want to make it as easy as possible for the users to find the product they are looking for, and if you create great pins, you should not be threatened by keyword searches.

Followers Perspective: Instead of searching through pinboard after pinboard to find what I am looking for, I can easily type my search query in the top left. The business that grabs my attention is the one I click on. Usually Pinterest is a game of browsing and seeing what grabs my attention, but sometimes there is a purpose to find a new idea, a new concept that I can use. So Pinterest, what do you have for me?

Down to the Research: Research your keyword options for each of your boards. Most likely the keywords that are used for searches in the Google search bar are going to be predominately the same ones used for any search bar. Choosing keywords with higher effectiveness can directly increase your visibility and follower reach. It’s as simple as that, target the searches with high volume, create an appealing pin and see your followers increase.

With these 3 tips for your Pinterest Research, you will create higher quality pins, drive more traffic & conversions and ultimately provide followers with the perfect pin for their search query.

Google Now Has a Brain

 Google Now has a brain

Google Now

Google, you never fail to wow us with your ideas that bring the future to the here and now. Google Now has a brain with the stunning ability to recall past searches and topics of interest and keep us up to date avoiding us having to perform another search query. With the integration of information across so many platforms as the technology world continues to evolve and expand it only makes us wonder, “what next?”

Google Now creates a world where the information is able to be presented to you on your multiple screens. Watch the video below to get a deeper understanding of Google Now:

The goal of Google Now is to “get you the right information at just the right time.” With the new Google Personal Assistant, Google continues to stay a step ahead of the need.

Why Google Now?

With such an overload of information from websites, having Google Now makes sense. No longer do we need to perform repetitive Google Now Screenshotsearch queries to re-discover the article on the web that we finally found useful. Google Now is able to organize the information that you have found relevant in a form called “Cards”. Cards would be similar to windows or tabs in your browser. Each window is dedicated to a particular search. One  card may be the weather, the next may be the score of your favorite basketball team, the next may be traffic and each of these cards is updated in real time. Of course the best technology and gadgets allow you to personalize the cards to fit your needs and interests. If you are not interested in knowing the route to work every day, because it is the same route and you never experience traffic, you do not need that card.

Where will Google Now be Available?

Google Now will be available on Android Smartphones and various Tablets. Google Now functions as an add-on to your Google Search experience.

Is Google Now knowing too Much?

My concern is, in order for Google Now to perform these stunning tasks for me, I have to tell it every detail. Let’s break it down, in order for Google to know all the information that “wows” us, we have to supply the end goals. I have to tell you I have a meeting at 9am on June 30th with Bob and Janice at the China Town Restaurant. Then, when it is 8 in the morning on June 30th Google Now can provide me with a warning that my meeting is in an hour, here are the driving directions to China Town Restaurant it will take x amount of time to get there, and here are your available routes. One aspect of Google Now that is not talked about very much, is the ability to let you know when friends are in surrounding areas around you. If you were to be in the mall, and your friend was as well, it would let you know. While shopping through a mall with a friend might sound appealing, there are instances that you would not need to broadcast your whereabouts publicly.

What do we think about Google Now? Let’s wait for it to launch, download it, and give our thoughts after Google has had the opportunity to show their new gadget off.

5 Ways to Build Relationships with Social Media

Acquiring customers is a huge focus for many social marketers. Think about the title, “social marketers”. You are creating a social market that is viable and that grows without you needing to cultivate every interaction. Building solid relationships between you and your customers is essential for the success of your social media. How can we increase the customer lifetime value? Customer Lifetime Value is an estimation of how much that customer is worth to you over the course of their relationship with your business. Don’t forget that ROI is simply a measure of dollars and cents. With ROI you analyze the customers worth after the transaction is made, you fail to focus on what drives the transaction.

I’m going to give you 5 amazing ways to build relationships with social media with the end goal to increase your customer attention, customer retention, and brand presentation.

5 Ways to Build Relationships with Social Media

 1. Be Personal, Don’t be an Aloof Communicator

Using a personal voice for social mediaI know, easier said than done. I’m not saying that you have to be BFF with every one of your Twitter followers or Facebook friends, I’m just saying be a real person. Have a voice, have a character, don’t be afraid to be an individual. Think if you were taking a potential client out to coffee, you’re not going to bring pie charts and wear your business logo swag. This is not a great tactic for making the customer feel comfortable, it may work out for you, but for the masses  it’s best to go with a more personal approach.

Personal Voice –> Builds Customer Comfort –> Increase Brand Advocates

Brand Advocates are the cheerleaders for your brand name. They are the customers that have you at the top of their mind when your category comes up. For example if you were Apple, your brand advocate might be having a conversation with friends talking about computers, the brand advocate would then immediately start raving about their Apple computer. These are the customers that not only are profitable with a high customer lifetime value, they also assist you in customer acquisition.

 2. Greet new Followers and Friends

Social Media has declined the need for courteous interactions. Let me tell you, it still matters and makes a difference today. When you receive a new Twitter follower send out a quick tweet and say:

Personalized Twitter Greeting for New Member

This is a small step that takes literally seconds but goes very far in the greeting of a new follower. In day to day terms, if you were to go out to lunch with a group that you had never been out with, and no one greeted you or recognized you had joined the circle how would that make you feel? You’d probably have very little interaction with them in the future, much less would it be the topic or highlight of your day. By no means am I saying if you greet your followers you will be the highlight of their day, but there’s a chance which is better than no chance.

If you are on Facebook then you will want to shoot out a quick message to that new member. Ask them to like any other associated pages, and let them know you are looking forward to their future interactions with your business pages.

3. Write to Include and Validate

Writing to include involves the structure of your posts and letters, write such that all viewers know you are open to feedback, suggestions, comments and interactions. You can do this by asking a question at the end or asking for peoples opinions on your topic.

Writing to validate means recognizing others for their interactions. If someone gives a great comment, make sure that you point them out before you answer or respond to their comment. When praising someone for their contribution be personal, write their names, if you fail to do this the customer may perceive you as overlooking their contributions and lose their valuable interactions.

4. Accept all forms of Feedback

This can be a difficult one, no one wants a bad review on their business page. Everyone wants to receive the 100% amazing business rating. Reality is, this is not going to happen. What can set you apart from your competition is how you deal with the comments and feedback that is not ideal. Always address these comments never delete them. Never let them sift down over time and hope that they will be a week old and no one will read them again. Truth is, people may never read it, but you don’t want to lose that customer.

5. Build on Customer Base Interests

The best topics of interest come from what your followers are talking about. Don’t sit there pondering for hours what to write about next, let the comments speak for themselves. Write and augment on what interests are already spurring in your followers, this not only increases their attention it is also relevant to them and shows that you are listening to their feedback. (Don’t forget to mention the individual who you got the great idea from).

Is Twitter right for your Business?

Twitter home customer paradigm

If you are like me you started a Twitter account to stay involved in all the social media trends. Fine, I waited a while to make sure it was worthwhile and wasn’t going to fizzle out, but I did start my own Twitter account. At first it was a mockery on late night comedic shows, people ranting how Twitter was being used, stating that not everyone needed to know you just made an amazing PB&J. The beauty of Twitter was the ability to message “real time information”, but it was being excessively utilized. After the hype has passed, the use of Twitter has continued to be analyzed further.

Who are the lead Tweeters?

According to Twitaholic.com the top Tweeters are @ladygaga with 25,702,398 followers. Following close behind is @justinbieber with 23,327,356 followers. This being said, the top 50 Tweeters are all comprised of celebrities and businesses.

My assumption from the charts is, if you can get people to follow your business on Twitter, why wouldn’t you? Not only are customer opting to listen to your marketing, but they are signaling right away that it is something they are interested in hearing. If only all marketing was this easy, reaching a target market that was willing to listen. Now that we have confirmed there is no harm in starting a Twitter account for your business, we can now address the issue of how to effectively Tweet to gain followers and keep your name in their minds.

General Guidelines for Tweeting

First if you need to start a twitter account you can go to Twitter.com. If you need a step by step guide to starting your own Twitter account I highly recommend you read how do I use Twitter?. If you are already set up with your Twitter account and ready to go, read on!

Here are some great guidelines to good practices for your Twitter persona.

1. Get an image for your profile, it is important for people to recognize your “brand image” and feel a connection with more than your Twitter handle.

2. Talk to your followers about things they are interested in. This is a great practice to show that you share a similar ground of interest other than yourself. A great way to do this, is when someone follows your Twitter account, follow them back this way you can see what they post about and get idea for what they are interested in.I need twitter followers

3. Be a Human. Twitter is a bird, not a robot. Don’t be a marketing machine that can only talk about how great Apple computers are, relate to businesses around you, lives around you and interesting news. The more informational your tweets the greater chance that people will talk about something new they learned from your Tweet.

4. Don’t beg for followers. Begging everyone at every opportunity to follow you will only make users view you as desperate for one, and not useful for seconds. By posting quality tweets, useful tweets or simply interesting your followers will slowly grow.

Tweet Topics

Don't know what to Tweet? Customer Paradigm

There is nothing more frustrating than when you have the task of writing a short 140 character Tweet, and you are left unable to compose a tweet. What do you do? What can you write differently that you may have a reaction to? What is enticing enough to get new followers or get your existing followers to bring you up in their daily activities? Here are some great guidelines for attention grabbing Tweets.

1. Ask for Feedback. Whenever you are tweeting about a topic, don’t just leave a tweet at directing someone to your blog post, invite others to interact back and give opinions. For example, if you were a tire company you would be tweeting frequently about new deals you have on tires. Instead of saying, “X brand is on sale for $120 a tire <add link>” you should try, “X brand in on sale for $120 a tire, what brand are you waiting to be on sale?” Social media users are beginning to understand their power, and are more inclined to respond knowing that their voice will be seen, or at minimum you will receive a notification.

2. Many birds Tweeting. If you are a business, have a few people tweeting this does two things, it gives the tweeters some time to come up with original idea to Tweet. It also puts a spin on your tweets having more than one voice and interest relaying information to your target market. The more interest platforms you can connect with your users, the more successful you will be.

3. Don’t be afraid to Tweet. Many twitter users understand that there are not many responses when their following is very low, but as their following increases and there are less responses they decline in the amount of tweets. Don’t do this, instead look at your past tweets and change your habits. Usually the outlandish things that catch your attention are the same things that people will interact and respond with. Again, don’t be afraid to Tweet.

Twitter Must-do’s

If you have skipped down to this section, I understand you don’t have time to read everything, but you need to know what you have to do at minimum to keep your Twitter bird flying. These are the bare bone essentials, when you need to know more, I hope you revisit.

1. Tweet at minimum once a day. You have a sentence maybe two that have to be under 140 characters (inclusive of spaces). That’s it, Tweet something and best of all it doesn’t have to be original. Work smart not hard. Follow people that are tweeting relevant and interesting news, if it something you find worth reading, retweet it.

2. Answer Fundamental Questions. Don’t forget the age old marketing rule, it is easier to retain customers than acquire new ones. If a follower asks you a question that is at the core of your business, something that will change their opinion about you, answer the fundamental question. For example, if you are a grocery store and an individual tweeted, “I just got sick @grocerymart, can I get my money back?” Make sure that you tweet back to these users and make amends to their situation. Hopefully, they will retweet, “@grocerymart thanks for your great customer service! See you next Tuesday.”

3. Tweet to fly higher. My personal favorite, Tweet beyond your scope of interest. Don’t stop learning new practices and never stop Tweeting on topics to meet interests of your many followers.

Win the Pinterest Game of Re-pins

pinterest-logo

Viral Pins, that’s the goal right? Everyone wants to create pins that have a high frequency of re-pinning. Fortunately around 75% of all actions on Pinterest are pins being repinned. Based on our attraction habits we are more likely to click on links that are associated with images. When entering a search query, our eyes are immediately drawn to the posts with images and YouTube thumbnails. Understanding this, it is easy to see how Pinterest has become such a viral collaboration of images.

Successful Marketing tips for Pins

 1. Create Attention Grabbing Images

This may seem like a no-brainer to you, but taking the time to pick the correct image out options is very important. For example, an attention grabbing image may be something that is not obvious and takes a closer look in order to understand what is going on. Giving users the feeling that they have discovered and found something unique, enticing them to re-pin and share it with their friends.

Pinterest Jellyfish Image

The image to the left is a pin that was posted by dream-marauders Tumblr account. There are plenty of images of jellyfish, but he chose one that was attention grabbing, it made you want to look at it longer to appreciate the full beauty of jellyfish. This particular image has received 682 repins and 332 Facebook likes.

Pick an eye-catching attention grabbing image.

2. Find pins from your existing site

Chances are that the images on your site satisfy the needs to depict your business and grab your attention, after all you did pick them for your site. By pinning them you are able to place an image to describe your services. You can also change your username to the URL of your website, this way you offer an easy link back to your website.

3. Brand your Images

Brand equity will always be important, don’t forget in the midst of all the social media, continuing to build your brand awareness should be at the forefront of your mind. Think of branding your images in more than the traditional form of simply adding your logo to an image. One unique idea that retail outlets do, is enticing shoppers to post pins of their favorite outfits from Traditional Clothing. This tactic is fantastic in that you are able to see what the fashion trend is and the individual posting themselves automatically markets your products for you.

4. If you want to Sell, Pin with Prices

Pins that have prices associated with them are more likely to get repinned and liked. The mindset of Pinterest is to peruse through a bunch of images and collect the images you like by repinning them, but do you like it enough to buy it? Don’t make Pinterest users click on your image, find your website, find the product, and then decide based on the price if they really want to buy it. Be up front and put the price on your image, guaranteed you will see higher conversion rates on your products and a lower bounce rate once users have finally found the price.

5. Encourage Comments and Feedback

This rule applies for all Social Media outlets. Even though Pinterest feels like a new form of Social Media you are still reaching for the most re-pins (shares), comments, likes and overall customer reach. Use your caption, it is like having a small web page where you only get a few lines of description, that capital is very expensive so use it well. Ask people for their opinions. Don’t discourage counting opinions, and make the topic something worth chatting about.

Facebook and Apple in Harmony

Exploring the integration of Facebook with Apple products

Apple decides to harmonize with Facebook

Everyone is swooning over the new Macbooks and Apple gadgets, with amazing image clarity, a sleeker design (if possible) and the esteem with Apple products. Let’s get down to what really matters, what are the capabilities? What are the new features that are going to make one Apple product out-do the next? I think they got it right this time, with Facebook integration. Their goal in the past has not been to avoid Facebook, since they have always had their app  in store, but they haven’t necessarily been making sharing through Facebook a one step process. While browsing on my Ipad2 I find incredible YouTube videos that I want to share. But, here are the steps I have to go through to post the Video on my Facebook wall.

1. Open the YouTube App

2. Hold and Copy the YouTube URL

3. Open my Facebook App

4. Go to my personal Facebook Wall

5. Paste the YouTube link into my status

6. Post – The worst thing about this post, is it does not give you the image snippet, it just posts the YouTube link that is not even enticing to view.

Let’s see, that is 4 steps too many. Ask me now, how many YouTube videos do I post to my Facebook wall through my Ipad2? None. That’s right, I don’t, because I have done the process once, it didn’t yield the correct results, I don’t do it again. But now, the game has changed with the Facebook app working in harmony with Apple products the ability to share is but two simple steps in my day.

The Facebook integration will be the greatest achievement of the new Apple iOS 6 and Mac OS X Lion. All the social media fiends that need to share every bit of information they find interesting will have the luxury of sharing at will. Share your photos, links, new app finds and even location to Facebook without ever having to open your Facebook App. The new process is a beautiful 2 step dance.

1. Find something interesting while browsing the web

2. Share that on Facebook

Apple – Best Facebook experience?

Apple boasts best Facebook ExperienceNo awards yet, but Apple is well known for pushing the limits of possibilities. Not to mention we all have access to Siri, I remember when that was futuristic. Apple’s goal is to create the best Facebook experience on any mobile device. Since trends are showing a steady increase in websites being visited through a mobile device, focusing on creating the best experience on the Iphone makes complete sense.

What can Facebook Expect?

The big social media buzz for the last Apple iOS 5 was the full integration of Twitter. After the release of Apple products with the Twitter integrated systems there was an astounding increase in Twitter sign-ups. Almost half of all photos that have been Tweeted have come from a iOS 5 platform. With the trends that Twitter saw, I can only expect that Facebook is excited for the increase in social media shares through iOS 6.

What can Apple Expect?

Social Media is a powerful force, there are no doubts there. Apple has decided to integrate Facebook into their App Store. When users visit the Apple App store and are signed in they will be able to see what apps their friends recommend, they can also like a new app that they have just downloaded and be easily encourage their friends to download it as well. Having social media play a role in the Apple app store will also give users a better picture of the quality and usability of each app. If their friends have also downloaded it, there is a higher probability that they will also enjoy the usability of that app.

There are many reasons behind this harmony of Facebook and Apple, but on a reactive position this could be Apple’s fix to ensuring that users don’t only participate in apps through the new Facebook app page. The battle for Social Media dominance continues.

Welcome Google Local & SEO Value!

Google Local Icon

The day has come for the merging of Google Local and Google plus pages. 80+ million Google Places accounts were automatically converted into Google+ Local pages. Fear not, the guide for all the perks and changes you will need to know are conveniently below.

Changes associated with Google Local:

1. Google+ Local pages have been integrated for Google search, Google mobile, Google maps and G+.

2. The 5-star Google ratings are replaced by the Zagat 30 point score.

The Zagat 30point score allows searchers to get a better sense of the true rating of a restaurant instead of averaging the scores out to 3.5 stars. As most rating goes, it’s the people who ecstatically love a place, the people who had an extremely poor experience and then the avid raters. Leaving the average score to be somewhat useless. Below are the guidelines for Local Scores.

Google Local Scores

Google Plus Local Page

3. New “Local” tab in G+

There is a new “Local” tab on the left navigation bar of your G+ page which shows results for Local Restaurants. Not only does the Local tab utilize your current geographic location, it also categorizes surrounding restaurants on their cuisine type. It is quite similar to a restaurant having their own personal G+ profile page. An amazing aspect about G+ Local pages is that it gives businesses more diversity in what they wish to display in comparison to the small amount of information previously available in Google Places accounts.

Businesses are able to have a growing circle, communicate back and forth with customers and post multiple pictures much like the functionality of Facebook pages. But! Google Local pages don’t send a user to their (old) Google places account to rate their restaurant anymore. Now, the functionality is completely integrated by skipping a step and allowing users to rate all in one place.

Google Local Result

4. Add restaurants to your G+ Circles!

When searching for businesses either through G+ or on the Google Search if you are signed into your account you can easily add restaurants of interest to your Circles. This is an amazing tool that allows you to almost “bookmark” your favorite restaurants and share them easily with friends. Not only can you bookmark them, but you can access your G+ account across your G+ apps on many platforms.

5. SEO Value of G+ Local Pages

This is undoubtedly the most exciting aspect to me. The Google Local page will be indexed! The content on your page will be valued and your social media interactions will have an affect relevant to your G+ Local page.

In the end as always, Google’s goal is to create high quality results for search queries. Yes, our search habits change with every  altercation Google decides to make. Yes, they are probably hoping to increase the engagement on their G+ pages by increasing restaurant interactions with consumers and searchers. There is no choice but for G+ interactions to increase by taking 80+ million places accounts and making them G+ Local pages. They just got 80+ million more G+ accounts! With the keyword “restaurants” being searched an average of 68 million times a month, and “food” being search an average of 84 million times a month I think they will see some result changes in their G+ engagement.

Spring Cleaning your Social Media Profile for Potential Jobs

My Resume Application

Social Media Scores Affecting your Potential Jobs

The game of being hired has been dramatically changed. It used to be a hopeless attempt of adding  a drop of water to the pool and hoping your contribution would be noticed. LinkedIn has become a huge network for resume building and recommendations, not to mention giving the ability to research your every detail with the simple information of your name. As you are involved in Social Media, either through creating a Facebook, Twitter, G+, Blogger, Tumblr or any other social media account, more information is available to potential employers. Cleaning up your online portfolio has become increasingly important, the information you freely share about yourself can either be points in your favor or against you regardless of how amazing your work ethic may be.

Steps to Clean up you Online Portfolio

This is an essential step for closing in on an interview. You have jumped the first hurdle of being picked out of the many applicants, now you have reached the second of being searched online for any further information that your resume may not reveal. This second step may happen without you even knowing, this is why it is imperative that you take into account your online presence as a secondary portion to your resume and cover letter.

1. Google yourself and see what comes up, you will be astonished at the information available on the internet.

2. Make a list of all your online Accounts and make sure to not skip over any.

3. Cleaning up your Google Plus profile.

Unlike Facebook, you can not prevent someone from adding you to their G+ profile. Everything that you write on your G+ page is visible to potential employers once they have added you to their circle. Going through your G+ page is very important. Delete any and all inappropriate posts or pictures.

If you do not have a Google Plus account create one. Google Plus Account Set-Up

Start building your Google Profile, add a tagline (selling point) about you, add your past employers in your circles and also use G+ to add potential employers you are interested in. Here’s our Google Plus page, add us to your circles to keep updated. Customer Paradigm

4. Cleaning up your Facebook profile.

The only item that people can see when they search for you is your profile picture. If your current profile picture could be categorized as inappropriate, change it to something that is more professional.

The fastest fix to monitoring what potential employers can see about you, is to go to your privacy settings and set each section to only be visible to current friends. For example if you are being hired by a Vet, and you have liked a lot of pages to do with animal care or animal causes, you may want to show this to your employer and not hide the visibility. Remember, each social media outlet is a potential resume bullet point, so make them count in the right places.

5. Keeping the LinkedIn profile relevant and up-to-date.

LinkedIn is a networking site of professionals, this should be your main focus. Spend some time updating your profile relevant to the jobs you are interested in. Make sure to request recommendations from past employers, and join groups of interest to your field.

Everything that is on your resume should at minimal be on your LinkedIn profile, it is easy for employers to spot discrepancies between your profile and resume. By cleaning up your profile now you avoid the awkward interview question.

6. Go through other existing blogs, websites, online profiles.

By now you understand the goal of cleaning up your social media profiles. Start going through any of your other existing accounts, be cautious of images, posts and even friends posts. Remember if there are available privacy settings, use those to maintain your audience to your social profiles.

New Facebook App Center

And Facebook has joined the race for the best app center!

View the Facebook App Center

What does this mean for Facebook users?

Could this possibly be Facebook’s response to a 35% decrease in user time? Facebook has always been an addictive site between the lull’s in the day, but with the new Facebook App Store, the low times during the day just got a little kick. Not only can you get lost in the games, and the cooperative games such as Draw Something, you can also view the apps your friends are downloading. With so many apps to decide from on the market, it’s nice to have your friends weed down the choices and let you download the best of the best.

It will not take long for this App store to take off, the statistics for games on Facebook are already outstanding!

  • Currently 200+ million Facebook users play games each month
  • Facebook is one of the most downloaded apps in any app store
  • Facebook directly linked to other apps more than 120+ million times in May

How will this affect the existing App stores?

The Apple App Store and Google Play may lose some downloading of apps, once a user has opened the Facebook application on their Android, Iphone, Ipad or whatever your choice of digital device there may not be a need to leave. One point of differentiation for Facebook is their drive to maintain high quality apps based on user ratings and amount of downloads. Hmm.. this reminds me of Google’s Tactic. Offering a higher quality website (app) for every search.

Another reason Facebook’s App store may be very successful is the ability to easily find friends to join in your games. Since you must be signed in to visit the App Store, all downloads and new games started can easily be shared. On many mobile devices a game that is downloaded will often be uninstalled if a user can not find enough friends to join in the game. By integrating Facebook and friends and apps, this is an idea that they are going to wish they had started a long time ago. Better late than never!

How do I use Twitter?

Using twitter

Twitter: Quick History

Twitter began with the concept of mass text messages to a particular group. After trial and error and a slew of ideas for the brand name, Twitter was born. July 15, 2006 was the first official tweet. Since its birth, it has experienced exponential growth, growing to 400,000 tweets in its first quarter. In January of 2009 twitter moved to the third most participated social media platform.

Understanding Twitter: Why is it used?

First of all, Twitter is used because it is free both to the sender of tweets and the recipients. Much of the internet is driven due to the freedom of the tools, think about it, would you use the internet if every time you needed to search for something you were pulling out your credit card? Would you search as long for the best price and read all those reviews if you paid to visit each site? Absolutely not.

A business reason for why it is so widely used is because you are able to measure your influence of your tweets. For instance after the following tweet:

If you were interested in this sale going on, you would click the link and be directed to the Customer Paradigm sale.

Tweets are not only useful in the business realm. They are also widely used for keeping up with friends and personal relationships. For example, you just took a picture of your grandchild’s first steps and you want to send a mass text message to EVERYONE in your life! Why wouldn’t you on such a milestone breakthrough? In this case, you can simply compose a tweet and write, “Look my grandchild Mason just took their first steps check out this beautiful picture! (add link to your picture)”. Now you have sent that beautiful picture out to everyone, and have not wasted your text messages or time composing a new text and sending it.

Getting started with Twitter

1. Create an account: Twitter

The first entry fields are simple: Your name, e-mail address and a password for your account.

The entry that matters the most: Your twitter handle. A Twitter handle is going to be the name that will be associated with your account. For example if you want “frostedflakes” to be your Twitter handle, when you post your name will show @frostedflakes. This will also be the name that you will give your friends to follow you on Twitter, so pick wisely.

2. Find your friends or follow other Tweets of interest to you

You would be missing out on the joy of Twitter if you just sent out Tweets and never hear from your own friends or from categories of interest. So, start searching for your friends, companies, organizations or even celebrities you are interested in following.

To find people to follow, sign in to your twitter account. You will see the navigation bar on your left, under your profile picture there will be a box that says, “Who to Follow” you can click “view all” and see many options that Twitter has determined you may be interested in. If you have a particular friend or group you wish to follow, you can type in the search bar on the top navigation.

3. Compose a Tweet

You can begin your first tweet, by clicking the “compose a Tweet” the blue icon on the top right. A small box will appear for you to begin typing your Tweet. Tweets are limited to 140 characters, much like how your text messages are limited to a certain amount of characters. What is a character? A character is any letter or spacing. As you type your tweet, there will be a small box next to the blue tweet button that will count down as you type showing you how many characters you have left, or how many characters you have gone over by the indication of a negative number.

When are the NBA Social Media Awards?

June 20th at 9pm, NBA TV will air the first ever NBA Social Media Awards.

NBA Social Media AwardsThe hosts of this premier event will be the legendary Rick Fox, Shaquille O’neal and Lang Whitaker. This will be the first time any major American sport league will dedicate an entire award ceremony to Social Media. It will be an event to remember!

What is the NBA Social Media Award?

This award will be a prestigious award, but with its new birth the prestige has yet to fester. The NBA Social Media Award will focus on the best moments in the 2011-2012 season that created a social media buzz. Was it the epic LeBron Dunks that had people posting the next day? Was it the tragic tear of Derrick Rose’s ACL in the first game of the series? Or is it those buzzer beaters that amp the crowd?

With any awards show, there are categories. Some of the NBA Social Media Award categories will be:

The BIG – Best In the Game Award

This award will recognize the player that has used all social media platforms the most, and in the best manner. This BIG Award is equivalent to the NBA Social Media MVP. The social media platforms that are included are Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other various social media tools.

The LOL – Laugh Out Loud Award

This award may not be welcomed by the NBA player, but it has given great entertainment to their fans. More specifically, the NBA player with the most shared or liked blooper video is the recipient of the LOL Award.

The Social Slam Award

Most epic of all, the reason the crowd stands on their feet, the dunk. Nothing silences an opposing crowd when they are on that devastating 17-0 run in the last 5 minutes like an authoritative dunk screaming, “I’m not done with this game”. The Social Slam award will be given to the dunk (during regular season) that is like or shared the most.

The FanNation Award

This is a team award which is given to the team with the greatest (percentage) improvement over the season. This percentage improvement is measured across every basketball statistic such as shooting percentage, assists, offensive boards, defensive boards, steals, interruptions and free throws.

How can I vote for NBA Social Media Awards?

Fans are able to vote from June 6th to June18th. Vote Here.

Why is this recognizing Social Media Interactions a big deal?

Recognizing social media is big deal, because social media is a big deal. The influence that the NBA has had with social media has been outstanding, they are the first American sports league that has attained a twitter following of 5 million. NBA is also achieving great things on Facebook with more than 13 million likes on their fan page. Not to mention, being involved in social media has become so popular, that fans are buying clothes with their favorite NBA players twitter handles.

Sitting in the crowd staring at the @BLAKEGRIFFIN throughout the game, the likelihood that you will pull out that smart phone and add another twitter is very high. As it should be, who doesn’t want to know what Blake Griffin is up to next?

The point being, Social Media has become an asset to every business. Having an awards for Social Media is finally giving it the respect it deserves. Don’t forget that the greatest thing about Social Media is that you are the ones casting your votes, you share that epic dunk, you like the YouTube with the jaw-dropping buzzer beater and you tweet about your every opinion.

Pinterest is now the third most popular social network in the world! Where does it sit? Behind Facebook and Twitter, third place might as well be first place given Facebook and Twitter’s head start.

They have fully understood the power of social media, by allowing their site to not be exclusive from other social media, but integrating Facebook and Twitter into the functionality of re-pins. If you have not understood by now, Social Media is driven by sharing interests.

“CONNECT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD THROUGH THE ‘THINGS’ THEY FIND INTERESTING”

–Pinterest Mission

Why should you use Pinterest for Business?

Advertising costs. A lot of money is lost spent on consumers that were not interested in your products in the first place. Granted, a great marketer wants to reach potential customers to create a need that was not recognized before their ad impression. But, what if you could make every one of those impressions count? The social media tool Pinterest allows users to choose what they are interested in, what they want to follow and what they want to re-pin. Stop spending money on acquiring followers that are not interested in your products, and have little to no customer lifetime value. The number of new Pinterest users sign-up is increasing at a faster rate compared to its competitors: Twitter and Facebook.

Tips for using Pinterest for Business

using prices on pinterest pins

Post prices with your Pins.

On average there are 40% more likes for pins with a price associated. This breaks down to users re-pinning and liking based on the value associated with the price. Remember, more likes equals a great reach for your pin.

Adding links to your pinterest

Links in your Pins

Be careful with this one, you can put links attached to your images, but it is against Pinterest “rules” to post a link in the description.

Links are very important in that they allow the user to actually take action once they are interested in your product. The fewer steps a user has to take to purchase your product increase the chance for a conversion. Add a link, make it easy for them to find and purchase your products.

increasing your social network with pinterest

Connect your business profile with all of your social networks. Don’t be afraid that if you push people towards your Facebook page or Twitter that they will be less focused on you Pins. Sharing is what the game is about. Your assumption is that friends share similar interests. Similar interests mean similar purchases.

Tip #1: A Video Is Worth More Than A Thousand Words

eLearning Series

by

Our next eLearning series is devoted to social media. I’ve resisted chasing after the buzz of social media for a while, because in many cases a lot of time, money and effort were being wasted on things that didn’t really contribute back to the bottom line. Now that the space has matured a bit, I’ll focus on case studies and examples of how companies are listening to their clients, driving more sales and generating results with social media.

The reality is that print, radio and TV advertising aren’t generating the same response that they once did. Less people are reading the newspaper. People with iPods and iPhones carry their music around and aren’t tuning into radio like they did in the past. And if you’re like me, most of the TV that you watch is digitally “taped,” watched “on demand,” or watched on the Web via a site like Hulu or YouTube.

Where did all of the people go? In a lot of cases, people are spending more and more time on social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, blogs and more. This series will focus on the tried and true strategies that make sense for businesses and organizations that want to better interact with their customers. I won’t focus on things that are just “cool,” but instead look at how companies are strategically using social media to leverage their brand and sell more stuff. Another way to put it: “Pioneers get the arrows. Settlers get the land.” Hopefully, this series can help you avoid the mistakes others have made in social media. Enjoy!

Social Media Tip #1: Video If a picture is worth a thousand words, what’s a video worth?

Video showing a blender and an iPhone

6.6 Billion Videos Watched In January 2010 in US This January, 112 million US Internet users watched 6.6 billion videos from the YouTube site – or about 59 videos each during the month. Why do people like to watch video? An email message like is a low-context medium. I can throw in a photo or graphic, but things like voice inflection, smiling or frowning aren’t usually conveyed through a written message. A video, on the other hand, allows the end viewer to see and hear a real person on the other end of the screen. TV is easily a hypnotic, addictive medium. According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube. With the Web, short video segments can build trust and confidence in your organization, and help with both retention and acquisition marketing campaigns.

Will It Blend – Viral Video Success. Probably the best-known example of viral video success was the “Will it Blend?” video series. If you’re like me, you’ve been frustrated that your expensive blender can’t chop ice. This viral video series showed how their blenders could chop and blend through really tough things like garden hoses, rakes and even cell phones. According to social media researcher Christian Briggs, the series of viral videos started when then-new Marketing Director George Wright found out that CEO Tom Dickson and the R&D team had a practice of blending up wooden boards to test product toughness. Wright had an idea to shoot video of the operation and post it online. He invested under $100 in supplies and convinced Dickson to blend up other things on camera. 186 videos later, Blendtec’s retail sales are up a reported 700 percent, its YouTube site has 200,000+ subscribers, and it has been featured on major mainstream media outlets like The Today Show, The Tonight Show, The History Channel, The Wall Street Journal and others. Among awards, Blendtec has won a bronze Clio in 2008 (Interactive category) for their interactive efforts. Video Testimonials

Not every company can pull of a Will It Blend series. A lower budget approach taken by one of our clients, Liz Canavan of Alchemy of Order, was to invite a few of her favorite clients in for a quick video session to talk about their experiences. She runs a company that helps people organize their homes, offices and lives. We’re in the process of adding these photos to YouTube as well as her website as a way to get new prospective clients to find her and understand how she can help them. Reciting Prayers Video of a prayer on top of mountain For a non-profit, it might be demonstrating how to do something difficult. Many Hebrew school students struggle with learning the Jewish prayers, so we helped Rabbi Jamie Korngold, the Adventure Rabbi, video some of the more common prayers on top of Copper Mountain. As a result, thousands of people have searched YouTube, watched her videos, and used it as an educational tool. Many have clicked through to the AdventureRabbi.org website to learn more, and some have signed up for trips or asked about other lifecycle services, such as Bar or Bat Mitzvahs.

Summary: Vidoes can be a compelling way to engage customers and prospects and increase awareness of your organization.
