Case Study: A client recently came to us with a capacity issue: their Magento
eCommerce site was running slowly, and they had hundreds of users trying to
make purchases and interact with the site during peak times of the day.
Before: Initial Setup - Everything Running on a Single Dedicated Server:
Everything, including DNS, dynamic Web Pages (php), Database calls, session
caching, memcache, and more was running on a single dedicated server. It was
hosted at a reputable hosting company, but simply moving to a bigger server
wouldn't suffice. We needed to distribute the load, so that when literally 1,000+
users per second were engaging with the site, it wouldn't slow down or crash.

Phase Two: 3-Tier, Scalable Magento eCommerce Set Up:
Instead, we recommended a highly reliable, scalable cloud-based hosting system:
- DNS hosting: not on same server as is done now; this is often a free service
by the domain name registrar.
- Proxy Server: handles initial data requests to the site; delegates to one
or more Web servers.
- Web Server: one Web server will be running to handle the load; additional
Web servers will be turned on automatically as demand / load increases.
- Mem Cache Server: we can also turn on additional by-the-hour servers to
handle Mem Cache processes as needed to lessen the overall load and demand.
- Database Server: one server will handle the mySQL database that records
all of the bids; offloading the database onto it’s own server will drastically
increase performance.
- Our recommendation in that case was to use Amazon.com’s Compute Cloud
system, which is best in class and allows easy expansion when needed.

across a proxy server, monsterous Web server, and a backend database server:

Phase Three: Magento eCommerce Infrastructure - Dynamic Webserver Spin Up
Architecture:
For normal usage of the site, the system will rely on the Proxy Server, Web
Server and Database Server for all needs.
High Capacity “Burst” Amazon Compute Cluster:
During periods of high volume / demand, especially during an auction, the system
will automatically “spin up” additional Web servers to handle the
additional capacity. The additional Web servers are priced at just $0.68 per
hour for a High CPU Extra Large Instance; running 10 would by only $6.80 additional
during peak load times.
In this case, the system will rely on the Proxy Server, multiple on-demand
Web Servers and Database Server for all needs.
